Says landfill company won't sort trash

Dear Editor:

There has been a serious misunderstanding about the proposed recycling program by Waste Management. They are proposing to do what Cherokee County is already doing.

We currently have an active recycling program where many city and county residents have curbside pickup or are provided with a bin in their community where they can take their recyclable materials.

Waste Management has no plans to go through the seven to eight thousand tons of garbage every day and pick out your soda bottles, cans or milk jugs. What will go into their facility as "wet garbage" (or household trash) will go directly into the landfill. It will not be sorted through and none will know what those trash bags contain.

Please realize the recycling they are going to do will be sorting the items that are eligible for recycling that you will take to them.

Don't let slick promises jeopardize the water and air of our county. We can do better than sacrifice our environment for a few dollars. George Wheeler Gaffney, S.C.
