Says landfill will be economic boost

Dear Editor:

An article written about the proposed 3Cycle project asked Waste Management the questions "How high? How deep? What if…?." These are good questions; but they aren't just relevant to this project; they are also relevant to our economy. How high is our unemployment rate going to go? How deep is the current recession? What if something doesn't change soon?

While I appreciate the concern that the McKowns Mountain residents have, these concerns would exist whether there was a proposed manufacturing plant or the current proposed environmental center. Cherokee County has more than 50,000 residents, and if something doesn't change, these residents are almost surely going to face major tax hikes in order to deal with the current economic situation.

Do 50,000-plus residents want to let a vocal minority decide their tax fate? To decide the availability of jobs? To decide what services the county will continue to be able to afford? We have an opportunity for an economic development project that will create jobs and provide a boost to both our economy and to the county's bottom line. With unemployment on the rise and the state budget on the decline, we need to look ahead at ways we can create jobs and bring needed dollars to Cherokee County. The proposed 3Cycle project is a way to do just that. Sincerely, Tena Thomas Blacksburg, S.C.
