Leach scores 21 points to lead Lady Indians to victory over rival Spartanburg

By LARRY HILLIARD Ledger Sports Editor larry@gaffneyledger.com

Gaffney point guard Keisha Leach was too much for the Spartanburg Lady Vikings to handle on Tuesday.

Leach scored on a driving layup to push the Lady Indians' advantage to four points with a minute to go and hit a free throw down the stretch to seal a 63-58 victory for the 2-0 Lady Indians.

Patricia Sullivan's two free throws in the game's waning seconds provided the final margin of victory.

The Lady Indians led by as many as eight points midway through the fourth quarter before the game tightened up on Tamara Johnson's threepointer and Jasmine Hearst's jumper pulled the Lady Vikings within 60-58.

That's when Leach, who finished with 21 points, drove past several Spartanburg players for a layup to put the Lady Indians up by four.

After the Lady Vikings closed within a basket, Leach made one of two free throws to push the lead back to three.

Johnson's missed a potential game-tying three before Sullivan chased down the loose ball and was fouled.

Gaffney had a 39-34 lead midway in the third quarter before the Lady Vikings hit a buzzer-beater to narrow the deficit to 45-43. Kierra Phillips added 19 points for Gaffney, which travels to Boiling Springs on Friday.
