Thomas (Tommy) Scott

2008-12-12 / Obituaries

Retired from Joy Manufacturing

Thomas (Tommy) Francis Scott, age 96, whose life was marked by an uncommon devotion to his family, friends, church and community died peacefully at home on Thursday, Dec. 11, 2008.

Tommy faced his battle with cancer as he had lived his life - with courage, determination, faith and good spirit. He was an inspiration to all who crossed his path, including the many doctors and nurses who treated him.

Born on Nov. 4, 1912, in Port Henry, N.Y., Tommy was the son of Joseph and Rose Ross Scozzafava. His loving Italian family also consisted of brothers, Johnny, Joe, Julius, George and Frank, and sisters Evelyn and Mary.

Tommy's work ethic was established at an early age. When he was a teenager, he worked part time for the railroad and also had the job of keeping the school's fires going. In addition, he worked for Port Henry Oil Co., owned by his father, until entering the Air Force in 1939. Honorably discharged from the service in 1945, he began

his long association

with Sullivan

Machinery Co., which later became Joy Manufacturing Co. From 1945 to 1977, he served the company as an engineering consultant and troubleshooter. His job took him to thirty different states and two foreign countries.

In 1947 he chose to make Gaffney his permanent home while still traveling throughout the country. Upon his retirement from Joy Manufacturing, he was selfemployed, continuing to work until he was in his 90's.

It is important to note that Tommy's life did not begin and end with work. The poet William Wordsworth wrote, "The best portion of a good man's life is his little unremembered acts of kindness and love." Tommy's good deeds were extended to people in all walks of life and are an integral part of his legacy. A charter member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, he served the church in countless capacities through the years. If any problem arose, the word would go out to "Call Tommy."

Tommy was predeceased by his first wife, Vera Grayson Scott and daughter, Joyce Behrens. Survivors include his devoted wife, Irene; daughter, Gerri O'Mallan and husband, Charles William and granddaughter Kelly Behrens.

As his last act of service, Tommy donated his body to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

A mass to celebrate Tommy's life will be offered at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 403 Vernon St., on Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2008, at 10 a.m. with Father Jim Crowley officiating.

The family will be at the home, 307 Union St.

Memorials in his name may be sent to Hospice Care of South Carolina, 1912 N. Limestone St., Gaffney, S.C. 29340; or to a charity of one's choice.
