School officials pushing for 4-day week
      A 4-day school week is among the issues school boards statewide will ask lawmakers to discuss when the new session starts in January. State Superintendent of Education Jim Rex has requested lawmakers modify current laws preventing local communities from putting in place more costeffective school calendars.

Sagging pants outlawed in Jasper
      BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) — It will cost you if you get caught with your pants down in one South Carolina county. The Jasper County council passed an ordinance Monday prohibiting sagging pants in public. It prohibits anyone from wearing pants more than three inches below the hips exposing skin or underwear.

GHS grad makes history
First woman in the U.S to be elected as presiding officer in both legislative bodies.
      Even as a child, the responsibilities of being a leader never phased Gaffney native Elizabeth Mitchell. Getting to watch her grandfather and uncle rise to public office at an early age, she learned how to voice her opinion while always remaining a role model. For those reasons, Mitchell's sister Joyce Childers knew her sibling's future was bright.

Suit filed against doctors, hospital
      Upstate Carolina Medical Center, two doctors and one of the hospital's corporate parents, Health Management Associates Inc., were sued Monday in Cherokee County Court of Common Pleas. The suit claims a lack of a timely diagnosis and medical treatment that might have saved a teen's testicle.

Capital One phishing scam spreading
      COLUMBIA - The South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs urges consumers to be wary of spoof e-mail messages from designed to look as though they were sent by Capital One. The scam begins with an unsolicited e-mail from Capital One claiming the consumer's account has been accessed by an unauthorized user.

POLICE REPORT
      The Gaffney Police Department reported the arrest of a toy store worker on a breach of trust charge after she and another person allegedly were caught trying to get $441 in merchandise out the toy store's door without paying.

Roll-out trash carts working well
      Blacksburg officials expected little to no problems when they voted to purchase trash carts for every home in the town of nearly 1,900 people in hopes of cutting costs. So far, so good. According to the Blacksburg Public Works Department, there have been few problems as a result of the new "push-carts" being introduced a few months ago.

Fed cuts key rate to lowest level ever
      WASHINGTON (AP) — The Federal Reserve has cut its target for a key interest rate to the lowest level on record and pledged to use "all available tools" to combat a severe financial crisis and prolonged recession. The central bank on Tuesday said it had reduced the federal funds rate, the interest that banks charge each other, to a range of zero to 0.25 percent.

Recognized for efforts to improve reading
      Alma Elementary received a Literacy Spot award Dec. 9 for the school's efforts to help young children read. Alma is among four South Carolina elementary schools recognized for their Reading Recovery programs where teachers work with at-risk first grade students.

Everybody loves a CHRISTMAS PARADE
      Gaffney and Blacksburg held their annual Christmas parades Saturday. Hundreds of residents braved the cold weather to enjoy Christmas music by county school bands, floats, fire trucks, Gaffney High JROTC cadets wearing reindeer hats, and even an appearance by Santa Claus and his reindeer.
