Newberry tops Saints, 66-50

The Newberry College men's basketball team bounced back from a two-game losing streak with a 66-50 victory over Limestone College on Tuesday in Eleazer Arena.

Brett Goodwell was Newberry's top scorer with 15 points and also grabbed seven rebounds and dished out a career best six assists.

Limestone (2-6) dropped its sixth straight contest despite a 22- point effort from Stewart Clark. Newberry limited the Saints to 19 points in the opening half and 17- of-47 (36.2%) shooting from the field.

The game was tight early, as Limestone started the game on an 8-3 run. Newberry was unable to score a field goal until Valiulis' three-pointer with 14:45 left in the first half. But that three-pointer was the beginning of a 10-0 run that gave the hosts the lead for good.

Newberry outscored Limestone 25-8 in the latter stages of the first half to take a 38-19 lead to the locker room after a last second three-pointer doubled up the Saints.

The Newberry starters were not needed long in the second half as they scored the first nine points of the half to extend the lead to 28 points at 47-19 with 17 minutes left. Limestone would battle back to within 19 against the starters.

Limestone resumes action at home against Mount Olive on January 3.

Blanca Gonzalez led the way for the Saints with a game high 17 points. She shot great from outside, sinking 4-of-6 from threepoint range. Whitney Todd was the leading rebounder for Limestone with five boards.

Newberry set the tempo of the game early and went up 19-2 after six minutes of play. Even with the large lead, Newberry never stepped off the gas pedal, earning a 37-11 lead with a little over two minutes remaining in the half. Newberry went back into the locker room up, 40-18.

The Saints outscored the home team by four points in the first ten minutes of the second half, cutting the deficit to 16 points at one point but could not get further over the hump.

Limestone will return home this Thursday to play Brevard.
