Byrnes rallies to hand Lady Indians first loss

By LARRY HILLIARD Ledger Sports Editor larry@gaffneyledger.com

Keisha Leach Keisha Leach The Gaffney Lady Indians waved good-bye to their season-opening three-game win streak on Monday.

Erin Frost scored 17 points as the Byrnes Lady Rebels went on a 11-2 fourth-quarter spurt to beat the Lady Indians, 58-54.

Free throw shooting contributed to the season's first setback for the Lady Indians, who went just 10 of 26 from the free throw line, including 7 of 17 in the fourth quarter.

The Lady Rebels were hot from the free throw line, especially late when Frost and Kanesha Morman combined to sink seven of their eight free throws.

Keisha Leach led the Lady Indians with 15 points.

Unlike in Friday's victory when the Lady Indians held off the surging Boiling Springs Lady Bulldogs, Byrnes wouldn't be denied.

Trailing 52-47 with just over two minutes left in the game, the Lady Rebels scored 11 of the game's final 13 points.

Frost keyed the game-deciding spurt with two baskets to slice the deficit to one.

The Lady Rebels finally took the lead for good on Breezy Hamilton's layup with 1:11 left to play.

Gaffney jumped to a 14-9 lead at the end of the first quarter before Byrnes outscored the Lady Indians 19-10 in the second quarter to lead 28-24 at the break.

Gaffney, which drops to 3-1, will try to regain its winning form in a rematch with Boiling Springs on Friday.
