Gaffney High wrestling team captures tournament championship

By LARRY HILLIARD Ledger Sports Editor larry@gaffneyledger.com

The Gaffney High wrestling team accomplished something rare on Saturday - winning a tournament title.

The Indians finished in a 3-way tie but captured the Ashbrook Dual championship on a tie-breaker.

Brian Sullivan was huge for the Indians, posting a 5-0 mark in the 140 lb. weight class.

Blake Phillips (112), Randy Hopson (145), Jared Barnhill (171) and James Costello (285) all finished with 4-1 records for the Indians, who beat Patton High School, 65-16; Hunter Huss, 42-28; Highland Tech and Myers Park, 42-31 before losing to Ashbrook 39-25.

Gaffney improves its overall dual match record to 16-3.

"I was impressed with everybody," Gaffney assistant coach David Bush said. "But we have some big matches after the holidays."
