Wildcats dump Whitmire to improve to 2-0 in region play

Travis Miller Travis Miller After a struggling start to the season, the Blacksburg boys basketball team is playing a whole lot better.

And they have a couple of region wins to show for it.

Josh Elmore scored 16 points and JJ Lattimore had 12 as the Wildcats beat the visitiing

Whitmire Wolverines, 76-53, on Friday to improve to 2-0 in the region.

The Wildcats used runs in the second and fourth quarters to seize control of the game.

Leading 15-12, Blacksburg outscored the visitors 28-13 in the second quarter to lead 43-25 at the half.

After the Wolverines closed to 51-41 at the end of the third quarter, the Wildcats went on a 12-0 fourth-quarter run to ice the game.

"I felt that our depth and our pressure got to them," Blacksburg coach Travis Miller said. "But we have to learn how to keep a lead. I felt good about our pressure but we didn't shoot the ball very well and we still have a lot of things to work on."

Blacksburg's defensive pressure forced the Wolverines into 30 turnovers.

Myron Mitchell chipped in with 11 points for the Wildcats, who return to action next Monday at a tournament hosted by Airport High School in Columbia.
