A very special school that cares about its children

Dear Editor:

This is from the mother of the 14-year-old deaf son who wrote you before (he is now 6- 6 and still growing).

I see in the papers where we have Goodfellows, Denny's and other organizations who have helped needy children. I think this is wonderful. There are a lot of families out of work.

The reason I am writing is to make sure that the SCSDB (South Carolina School for the Deaf & Blind) receives credit for its wonderful long tradition.

How many people besides the families of the children who go there know that since my son was 2 1/2, the school has businesses (anonymous) pick from a list of these "special children" whose families, like me, can't provide Christmas for their children and take a list of things that these children need and would love to have and go out and get these things.

I'm talking about clothes, coats, shoes and one toy.

The parents never know who did this. We just send thank-you notes to the school.

So, you see, this is a special school that cares about its children. And believe me, they do consider the kids theirs.

My son has grown so much because of the SCSDB.

Everyone who doesn't have a special needs child should still go visit the school. Trust me, your eyes and heart will be opened.

The school has also always had a Santa come to the elementary school every year and give out gifts.

Thank you, Cynthia Millen

Gaffney, S.C.
