Was more than just a caretaker to Rose

Dear Editor:

A beautiful life came to a close on Monday, Dec. 15, when Rosanell "Rose" Spencer Kennedy answered The Master's call.

I had the honor and opportunity to be her caretaker. To some, I was her caretaker, her nurse or her companion, but to her husband, Ken, daughters Carol and Kathy and her brother, I was part of the family.

Ken was working part-time at Winn Dixie. He told me the first day to keep her in the bed and watch her.

But I didn't.

I treat people the way I want to be treated. I started working with her little by little to get her stronger.

We had a routine. I had her walking, riding her bicycle and exercising on the floor or the couch — anything to keep her from lying in the bed.

To make a long story short, Rose and I walked to the store three times a day and went to visit her job to see Lowry, Sally, Little Man and the rest.

Anytime you can make a difference in a person's life, do your best.

You never know when that person may be you.

Rose lived 16 years after her stroke. I thank the Kennedy family and all of the other families over the years who have entrusted me with their loved ones.

May God continue to bless you all.

Jean Sarratt Gaffney, S.C.
