Zula Hughey

Zula Elizabeth Davis Hughey, 87, of 574 McKown's Mountain Road, went home to be with God on Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2008, after several months of declining health.

Born in Hugo, Okla., on Dec. 16, 1921, she lived the majority of her life in Cherokee County and was a lifelong member of Sardis United Methodist Church, holding virtually every administrative office in addition to teaching Sunday School in the Junior Division for over 40 years.

Mrs. Hughey was an active member of CHAPS and WIRE and was particularly proud of her involvement with the DMW Volunteer Fire Department. Her community service was acknowledged when she was chosen as the 1990 WIRE Woman of the Year for the state of South Carolina. After retiring from Timken in 1983, she finally had time for her passion - quilting. She was prolific member of the Landrum Quilting Guild and especially enjoyed constructing children's quilts for the Ronald McDonald House.

Her sweet smile and gentle spirit will be missed by family and friends including her daughter and son-in-law, John and June Hughey Campbell; her beloved granddaughters, Jacqueline Heather Campbell of Gaithersburg, Md., and Julia Holly Campbell of Sebastopol, Calif.; her caregiver, Joyce Marino; siblings, Carrie Lucille Davis, Hattie Davis Mullinax, Ethel Davis Stroupe Sprouse, and sister-in-law, Lonnie Bell Parker Davis, all of Gaffney, and Charles and Flora McCraw Davis of Boiling Springs, N.C.; and a myriad of cousins, nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Hughey was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, William H. (Bill) Hughey; her parents, Charlie and Mattie Peeler Davis; and siblings, Rae Davis Stroupe and James A. (Jimmy) Davis, and brothers-in-law, Boyce Mullinax, Erskine Sprouse, Nesbit Stroupe and Wilton Stroupe.

Her funeral service will be held Saturday, Dec. 27, at 2 p.m. in Blakely Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Don Boshell officiating. Friends will be greeted for an hour prior to the service.

In addition to pallbearers Chris Cowley, Alan Davis, Scott Mullinax, Ricky Peterson, Rudy Peterson and Ray Upchurch, there will be a contingent of honorary pallbearers from the DMW Volunteer Fire Department.

Following the burial, a Celebration of her Life will be held in the social hall of Sardis United Methodist Church at 4 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the Friends of Sardis Cemetery Endowment, 1065 Patrick Road, Gaffney, SC, 29340; or the DMW Volunteer Fire Department, 538 McKown's Mountain Road, Gaffney, SC, 29340.
