David Owens

David Earl Owens, 73, of 1563 Goucher School Road, affectionately called "Papa David" by his grandson, Will, and his granddaughter, Kimsey, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, Dec. 26, 2008.

Born in Gaffney, he was the son of the late O.W. Owens and Emma Burgess Owens. He was retired from Acoustics Incorporated of Charlotte, N.C.

David was an avid bird hunter in his younger years and loved the outdoors, whether it was just walking through the woods, planting a garden or a day's work on his tractor. His love of the outdoors was shared with Will and together they spent many hours discussing deer and turkeys, planting food plots, building fences and recently a dog house.

He referred to Kimsey as genuine, one of a kind, and as his hero because of the way she handled her diabetes. Together they sculpted a "fish" for the South Carolina Beta Club Convention that won second place in the state.

He enjoyed the breakfast at Brandy's with the "regulars" as he called them and a good steak and fish at the Lighthouse in Pacolet. Mr. Owens was a member of Goucher Baptist Church.

In addition to his only child, Lynne Owens Price and her husband, Bill, he is survived by his grandson, Will Price, and granddaughter, Kimsey Price; brothers, Eugene Owens and his wife, Barbara; James "Shorty" Owens, and his wife, Margaret, and Donald "Duck" Owens; and sisters, Ethel Medley and Mary Wright and her husband, Glen, all of Gaffney.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Lee Owens and Ralph Burgess; and two sisters, Lorene Owens and Margaret Burgess.

Services will be held Tuesday, Dec. 30, at 2 p.m. in Blakely Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Norman Gardner officiating. Interment will be in Frederick Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends Monday, Dec. 29, from 6-8 p.m. at Blakely Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Goucher Baptist Church Building Fund, 415 Goucher Creek Road, Gaffney, SC, 29340.

The family is at the home of Bill and Lynne Price, 1729 Chesnee Hwy.
