Gaffney grapplers earning respect
By LARRY HILLIARD Ledger Sports Editor larry@gaffneyledger.com

In years past, you might have needed Mapquest to locate the Gaffney wrestling team.

Not this season.

Under the direction of second-year coach Larry Lackey, the Indians already have racked up seven dual match wins - and it's only early January.

"The young men have come a long way," Lackey said. "We are starting a lot of freshmen and sophomores. And that's a good thing. You have to pay your dues and the wrestlers are doing that."

Daniel Pressley has been huge for the Indians this season. Pressley has compiled a 35-4 overall record in the 140 lb. weight class. He pinned both his opponents on Wednesday, including a Top-10 ranked wrestler from Hillcrest High School.

"Daniel is wrestling very well for us," Lackey said.

Joseph Evans at 112 lbs. has been another bright spot, according to Lackey.

Lackey said he anticipates several wrestlers will advance to the state tournament this season.

Lackey also credits Gaffney High athletic director Phil Strickland for beefing up the schedule with a lot of tournaments and matches.

"Coach Strickland wants to have a good wrestling program and he's been a tremendous help," Lackey said.

While the varsity wrestling team is enjoying a resurgence this season, the future is even brighter.

The middle school team, with members from Ewing, Granard and Gaffney middle schools, is undefeated this season.
