The Cherokee County School District has established a scholarship endowment in honor of longtime school trustee Ola Copeland.
Copeland, 61, died unexpectedly in October of 2007 after battling health problems in recent years. She was a school board member for more than 15 years and was a strong advocate for education.
Her many community activities included service on the boards for First Steps, Communities in Schools and the Gaffney High School Renaissance Committee.
The district will honor her memory by awarding a $500 scholarship to a senior, superintendent Dr. Bill James said. The scholarship will be funded from interest earned on the initial endowment. The first scholarship will be awarded this spring.
"The school district is very excited about the establishment of this scholarship and the financial assistance it will provide students of Cherokee County for many years to come," James said.
Contributions can be made to the Ola Copeland scholarship fund by individuals, corporations and civic organizations.
"Any contributions or donations to the scholarship fund will be tax deductible and will be deposited in a separate account established for the endowment," James said.
Any contributions can be mailed to the school district at this address:
