Lady Indians topple Hillcrest

Kierra Phillips and Breanna Watkins played big roles for the Lady Indians on Tuesday.
Phillips had 17 points and Watkins had 11 to help Gaffney improve to 2-4 in the region with a 52-49 victory over visiting Hillcrest.
Phillips' offensive rebound put the Lady Indians up 50-49 with 1:15 to go.
Hillcrest's Britanny Washington had a chance to tie or give the Lady Rams the lead, but she missed two free throws and misfired on a third after a lane violation.
Parris Davidson extended the Lady Indians' advantage to 52-49 with a layup. The Lady Rams had a chance to tie the game but a 3- point heave missed the mark at the buzzer.
Courtney Friddle had 14 points to lead Hillcrest.
With the score tied at 38 with 6:30 left to play, Davidson put the Lady Indians on top with a layup.
Gaffney led 45-42 on Watkins' 3. But Hillcrest went on a 7-0 spurt to pull ahead 49-45.
Free throws by Davidson and Phillips narrowed the deficit to 49- 48 before Phillips' stickback gave the Lady Indians a lead they would never relinquish.
Gaffney led 10-6 at the end of the first quarter and 24-13 at the break. After the break, the Lady Rams went on a run to close within a point at end of the third quarter.
