Church news

Eastside Baptist Church in Blacksburg will sponsor its second annual Men's Conference Saturday, Feb. 2, from 12-2 p.m. at Blacksburg High School. Admission is $10 for a catered lunch. For information and tickets, call 704-739- 3715 or 864-839-4743.

The Gospel Unity Chorus of Ebenezer Baptist Church will celebrate its anniversary Sunday at 3:30 p.m. Speaker will be the Rev. David Sullivan, pastor of New Zion Baptist Church, Spartanburg.

The American Cancer Society will host a breast cancer workshop Saturday, Jan. 19, from 12-2 p.m. at Metropolitan AME Zion Church.

Eastside Baptist Church, 1284 E. Cherokee St., Blacksburg, will host its third Saturday night singing Jan. 19 at 7 p.m. Guests will be Roland Drye and The Melody Singers, The Golden Valley Crusaders and The Hamptons.

The children and youth ensemble of Trinity AME Zion Church, 109 S. Academy St., Blacksburg, will celebrate its 29th anniversary Sunday, at 3 p.m.

The Voice of Triumph Worship Center, 179 Corry Road, Blacksburg, will have a gospel singing featuring His Anointed of Clover on Jan. 20 at 11 a.m.

Goucher Baptist Church, 415 Goucher Creek Road, will have a church-wide yard sale Saturday, Jan. 19, from 7 a.m. until noon. Proceeds go to benefit a mission trip to Peru.

Junior Missionary advisors of the Thickety Mountain Baptist Association are asked to meet Monday, Jan. 21, at 3:45 p.m. at Bethel Baptist Church, 218 Dr. L.M. Rosemond Lane.

Holiday hours

The Cherokee County Public Library will be closed Monday, Jan. 21, in observance of Martin Luther King's birthday.

The City of Gaffney Sanitation Department will observe Jan. 21 as a holiday. Monday's route will be picked up Jan. 23.

Iron City Ministries Inc. will be closed Jan. 18-21 and reopen Jan. 22. Hours are 9 a.m.-noon, Monday through Friday.

Senior Center events

The following programs will be held at the Gaffney Senior Center, 499 W. Rutledge Ave.: Tuesday, Jan. 22, 10:30 a.m., Cherrill Moshier of Shelby will host a free art demonstration to encourage seniors to learn to paint and tell about future classes; Thursday, Jan. 24, 10:30 a.m., the S.C. Election Committee will be at the center to show seniors how to use a voting machine and discuss the importance of voting; Monday, Jan. 28, 10:30-11:30 a.m., the "Hooks and Needles with Love" group will meet and work on knitting and crocheting hats. Special events

Moses Wood Camp Sons of Confederate Veterans will celebrate the birthdays of Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson at the Thickety Station Grill on Jan. 19 at 6:30 p.m.

Concerts

The Limestone College Honors Jazz Band Clinic will be held Jan. 18-19 with free concerts each night in Fullerton Auditorium. The clinic is composed of high school students from schools throughout the state. Friday night's feature performance showcases the Spartanburg Community Jazz Band at 7:30. On Saturday, the clinic participants will perform at 5 .

Meetings

The Gaffney Business and Professional Women's' Club will meet Monday, Jan. 21, at 6:30 p.m. at the House of Pizza. The program will be "Health Dangers for Women." Guests and prospective new members are welcome.

The bi-annual meeting of Friends of Sardis Church Cemetery Inc. will be held Jan. 26 at 2:30 p.m. in the church fellowship building.

Blacksburg VFW Post 4941 and its Ladies' Auxiliary will meet Tuesday, Jan. 22 , at 7 p.m.

Notices

The absentee voting precinct for the Presidential Preference Primary elections is open at the Voter Registration Office. The Republican Presidential Primary is Saturday, Jan. 19. The Democrat Presidential Primary is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 26. The registration office is located at 1434 N. Limestone St. (The Peachtree Centre) and is open from Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. The office will be closed on Monday, Jan. 21, in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Computer classes

The Cherokee County Adult Education Program will offer a basic Excel computer class beginning Tuesday, Jan. 22. Class hours will be 5-8 p.m. and points of emphasis will be how to input a formula, use of the card wizard/create graphs and format a spreadsheet. If interested, contact Mrs. Sellars in the adult education office, 487-7152 or 487-1209. Space is limited.

The Cherokee County Public Library is now accepting registration for its first series of public computer classes. Funded by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services through the Library Services and Technology Act and administered by the South Carolina State Library, the classes focus on training patrons ages 55 plus. "Computer Basics," an introductory class for adults with little or no computer skills, and "Introduction to the Internet," a basic introductory class on internet navigation and online resources, will be taught in two-hour sessions during January and February. The January classes will be taught Wednesday, Jan. 23, and Thursday, Jan. 24. The February classes will be Monday, Feb. 11, and Wednesday, Feb. 13. Class schedules and registration information are posted at the library, or you may call the library at 864-487- 2711 for more information on this, or any, library program.

Painting classes

Cherrill Moshier, an artist from Shelby, will hold an "Introduction to Art" class on Tuesday, Jan. 29, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Gaffney Senior Center. Those participating should bring their own supplies, whether it's sketching, painting, chalk, watercolors, oil, canvas, etc., and join others in learning to express your creativity. Classes will continue on the first and third Tuesdays of each month and will be $5 per class. Call Linda at 487-2725 to register.

Blood drive

The Gaffney Police Department will be sponsoring a blood drive for the Piedmont Blood Center on Friday, Jan. 25, from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. The mobile unit will be parked in front of City Hall.

Support groups

AA meetings are held at 8 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday in the building behind Limestone Methodist Church on Carlisle Street. If you have a problem with alcohol, you are welcome to attend.

Education

The GED examination will be given in Gaffney on March 8 at the Limestone Community Learning Center. Those adults who wish to prepare for the high school equivalency diploma may enroll in the adult education program Tuesdays at 5 p.m. or Fridays at 8:30 a.m. The assessment and orientation takes less than three hours, and many students who start now and work hard will be ready to pass their GED examination in March.
