Officials expect heavy turnout for primary

Candidates apparently don't need to remind voters there's a primary here Saturday.
As many as 5,000 voters are expected to go to the polls for Saturday's Republican Party Presidential Primary, according to Cherokee County Election Commission Chairman Suzanne Turner. That's about 20 percent of the 25,372 voters who have cast ballots in an election within the past 10 years.
Early voting also has been heavy, with the county election commiss- ion receiving 246 absentee ballots as of Thursday afternoon.
"There seems to be a lot of interest in both primaries," Turner said.
The Democrats have scheduled their presidential primary for Saturday, Jan. 26.
Voters who cast ballots in the Republican presidential primary can't vote in the Democrat presidential primary.
"It's either one or the other," Turner said.
For the presidential primaries, the number of polling places has decreased from 33 to 13.
Voters can check their precinct to know where to vote by visiting SCVotes.org and using the "Find Your Precinct" feature or by using the "Check Your Voter Registration" feature on the menu under "Voters."
Voters without access to the Internet can contact the voter registration office at (864) 487-2559.
Signs will also be posted at old polling places directing voters to the new polling place.
The polls will open at 7 a.m. Saturday and close at 7 p.m.
