Now that the opening for a new head football coach has been posted on-line, Blacksburg officials apparently won't have to wait long for the applications to arrive.
Blacksburg High Principal Jim Touchberry said the school already has received several letters of interest from coaches around the state.
Touchberry declined to identify the coaches but said letters of interest have come from head coaches as well as assistants.
Touchberry said he wouldn't be surprised if assistants on the current staff apply for the job, which became vacant last Wednesday when head coach Robbie Blanton announced his resignation after nine years on the job.
Blanton said he intends to remain as the school's athletic director.
The school district posted the vacancy on Friday.
According to the posting, the position includes a 190-day teaching contract and coaching supplement.
Applications will be accepted until the position is filled, according to the posting.
Touchberry said school officials hope to begin sifting through the list of applicants within a few weeks and would like to start the interview process as soon as possible.
Touchberry said he hopes to hire a new coach in time for spring practice. Spring drills typically begin in late April or early May.
