WANTED Cherokee County Council embraced the idea of trying to reduce its transfer station costs. To do so, council agreed this week to advertise for Request for Proposals (RFPs) from solid waste companies wanting to operate the transfer station. The contract with the present transfer station operator, Allied Waste, must be renewed by June 1, Cherokee County Assistant Administrator Holland Belue told council members. Belue said the county could extend the length of the contract for five more years or renew it on an annual basis for up to five years. Under the contract, the county must pay a fee to Allied Waste if it exceeds its monthly cap amount. Councilman Bailey Humphries, who chairs the county's public works committee, said he would like for Allied Waste to drop its monthly cap provision. Responding to a question from councilman Charles Mathis, county attorney Joe Mathis said advertising for RFPs wouldn't void the county's existing contract with Allied Waste. |
