Limestone baseball coach Chico Lombardo will likely be smiling a lot this season.
That's because the longtime coach returns a veteran squad bolstered by a young and talented pitching staff.
Just how deep is the pitching staff? Brian Baugher, one of the mainstays of the starting staff a year ago, will spot start and be used in the bullpen this time around.
"We feel we are a lot deeper pitching," said Lombardo, whose team opens the regular season Saturday at home against Lynchburg.
Clayton Knight and Josh Joseph, a pair of hard-throwing sophomores, will start the team's first two games this weekend.
Chris Zimmerman, a returning pitcher, and Kyle Matheney, complete the starting rotation.
Lombardo likens Matheney to Atlanta Braves crafty lefty Tom Glavine.
Backed by veterans in the field, Lombardo feels more at ease relying on so many untested pitchers.
"There's more margin for error for our young pitchers," the Saint coach said.
The Saints return five position players, including shortstop Dylan Anthony, a 6'-2", 180 lb. shortstop from W. Lincoln High School.
The Saints are expecting big things from Anthony this season.
"He has great tools," Lombardo said.
Veteran Phil Soden returns at first base, while Drew Lydon will play second and Matt Still will be at third.
Kyle Brewer is back behind the plate. He'll be backed up by Ryan McKenzie.
The outfield is another team strength with Zach Watkins in center, A.J. Bshara in left and Greg Dailey and Tim Welsh platooning in right field.
Lombardo said this might be his fastest team.
"We had some individuals who were faster, but this is probably the team with the best overall team speed," he said.
The lineup has both speed and power. Adam McSwain, who started off hot but slumped after an injury, returns as the designated hitter.
The speedy Bshara will leadoff with Lydon batting second and Soden in the three hole. McSwain will bat cleanup.
The Saints were picked to finish sixth in a preseason poll. But Lombardo feels this team could surprise.
"I like this team," he said.
