Humane Society ceases operations
By LARRY HILLIARD Ledger Staff Writer larry@gaffneyledger.com

Citing a lack of community and government support, the Humane Society of Cherokee County has ceased operations here.

The Humane Society's board of directors voted Monday to disburse its assets to two local animal welfare organizations.

In an e-mail, the Humane Society blamed a lack of volunteers and the county's opposition to a proposed no-kill shelter for its decision.

"The assets will be given as directed donations to an organization that will promote low-cost spay/neuter services with subsidies for qualified Cherokee County residents, and to an organization with a track record of rescuing and transporting unwanted and abused animals to safety," the e-mail read.

Disagreements with the local animal control officers is another reason for the board of directors' decision, said Judy Wyles, spokesperson for the Humane Society.

"With the difficulty we had in resolving that, we just feel the best thing is to disband and reallocate."

Cherokee County Councilman Bailey Humphries, who oversees the animal shelter as chairman of the public works committee, said he regrets the Humane Society's decision.

"It's unfortunate it has happened," he said. "Since we are always looking to improve services, hopefully, we can work with the entities (the Humane Society) will throw their support behind."
