BHS faculty will host dinner to benefit teacher diagnosed with cancer Blacksburg High faculty hopes residents will join them for Sunday dinner Feb. 17 to help a teacher recently diagnosed with cancer. Art teacher Jared Harris, 36, was recently diagnosed with colon cancer. Harris is married to former Blacksburg High art teacher Chris McDowell Harris. The couple has a 1-year-old daughter. "To assist this young family with the many medical bills and loss of work days, the BHS faculty and staff are sponsoring a benefit for Jared Harris," teacher Pam Hughes said. The benefit will be held Feb. 17 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. in the Blacksburg High School cafeteria. The Sunday dinner menu is Southern fried chicken tenders, rice and gravy, green beans, roll, homemade dessert and a choice of tea or lemonade. Tickets are $8 for adults. Child tickets are $4 and are available only for children 12 and under. Take-out plates are available. Jared Harris has taught art at Blacksburg High for the past six years. He recently helped the school's History Club by doing the sketch for a historical mural the students plan to paint in downtown Blacksburg this spring. "Any and all donations to the family are welcome and may be made during the benefit," Hughes said. "Please support this young family as they face these devastating times." Benefit tickets can be purchased from any Blacksburg High staff member or in the school's main office. |
