Vance Wendell Moss Retired painting contractor LINCOLNTON - Vance Wendell Moss, 87, died in Lincoln Medical Center in Lincolnton, N.C. He was born in Blacksburg to the late C.B. and Paron Sams Moss. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his lovely wife of 59 years, Alma Cornwell Moss, who was a past matron of Lincoln Chapter Number 114, Order of the Eastern Star. Vance was a member of First Baptist Church of Lincolnton and was ordained a deacon in 1954. He served on the building committee and was a Sunday School teacher. He was a retired painting contractor. A World War II veteran, he served three years in the Air Transport Command as an aircraft mechanic. Vance was a lifetime member of the Lincoln Masonic Lodge No. 137 and a Thirty- Second Degree Mason in the Scottish Rite Bodies, Charlotte. He earned his pilot's license in 1969 and received a glider rating at the Bermuda High Soaring Club in Chester in 1974. He also served 21 years as a first lieutenant in the N.C. Wing of Civil Air Patrol. Services will be today at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Lincolnton with Dr. Stanley Spence, Dr. Dixon Free and Dr. Phil Campbell officiating. Burial will follow in Hollybrook Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30-1:45 p.m. at First Baptist Church prior to the service. He is survived by a sister, Louise M. Cosens of Anderson; two brothers, Walter Cornwell of Hickory and Charles Cornwell of Cherryville; and a number of nephews and nieces.
