For Gaffney boys basketball coach Mark Huff, there is no other option.
Huff is preparing as if the Indians have qualified for the playoffs. But that won't happen unless Dorman wins at Spartanburg tonight.
The Vikings won the previous meeting with the Cavs and must sweep their archrival to qualify for the playoffs. Gaffney is 6-6 after a season-ending loss to Hillcrest on Tuesday. Spartanburg is 6-5. The Indians hold the tiebreaker edge if both teams finish at 6-6.
Huff thinks that Dorman has a chance to beat the Vikings since the Cavs also have a lot at stake.
"They have an incentive, too," Huff said. "Dorman has been playing well and a win could give them the three seed and maybe even the two seed."
After taking Wednesday off, the Indians returned to practice on Thursday.
"I told the kids that we weren't going to sit around for five days and wait," he said. "We're still practicing in case we do get in."
Gaffney would enter the playoffs as the No. 4 seed and play Region III's No. 1 seed, the Fort Mill Yellow Jackets.
It's a game Huff likes his chances in.
"When you can beat a Spartanburg at Spartanburg and beat Dorman at their place, you can win anywhere," he said.
The Indians also beat Fort Mill twice during a summer team camp, Huff added.
"We wouldn't be going over there just to lie down," he said. "If you make the playoffs, you have a chance to win."
But the Indians must reverse a recent shooting slump if they want to make noise in the playoffs. The Indians made just 38 percent of their shots in a home loss to Mauldin last Friday and shot a miserable 25 percent against Hillcrest.
"We have to improve our shooting," Huff said. "You can't even beat a bad team when you shoot 25 percent."
Huff said the Indians are missing shots they should be sinking.
"I've looked at the first half of the Hillcrest game and we already missed seven layups," he said.
The playoffs will begin next Wednesday with or without the Indians.
