Lake Whelchel goose hunt this weekend

Too many geese have become a fowl problem at Lake Whelchel.

That's the reason the Gaffney Board of Public Works will close the lake Thursday and Friday for a 2- day geese hunt.

The purpose of the hunt is to reduce the geese population at the lake, BPW General Manager Donnie Hardin said.

"They have become a nuisance for everybody," Hardin said. "Their numbers keep growing. People have to watch so they don't step in goose droppings."

The lake will open at 6 a.m. and close at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday.

A total of 24 permits will be issued for the hunting period.

"Originally, we were just going to issue 15 but we wanted to make it accessible for more people," Hardin said.

South Carolina Department of Natural Resources officers will supervise the hunt,
