School trustees unanimously hired Mickey Moss to be the new Blacksburg High football coach Tuesday evening.
Moss has compiled a 163-137 record at four schools. The Blacksburg native is currently the athletic director and head football coach at Wren High School.
Moss led East Clarendon to four region titles and the Class A state championship in 1985. He has coached at Lake City and Saluda high schools. Lake City made the playoffs in 10 of his 13 seasons.
Moss plans to finish his coaching career at Blacksburg High.
"I plan on this being my last coaching stop," Moss said. "I feel very fortunate to come back home. I have so many old friends in Blacksburg."
Moss will meet with the Blacksburg football players Thursday. He will run spring practice.
"I have a pretty good idea on what I want to do on offense and defense," Moss said. "I want to look at the talent on the team first and make sure every player is in the right position."
Moss will spend the next several weeks putting together his staff. He will meet with current Blacksburg High assistants as well as members of his Wren coaching staff.
"I hope to bring some of my assistants with me," he said.
Moss replaces Robbie Blanton, who will remain as the Blacksburg High athletic director. Moss will serve as the school's assistant athletic director of football operations.
Moss and his wife, Cathy, have two adult sons, Mike and Matt. Both sons are coaches.
"I have always wanted to work with coach Mickey Moss. I plan to support him in my role as athletic director in every way I possibly can," Blanton said. "I think he is a great fit for Blacksburg. I couldn't be happier."
The school district received 30 applications and interviewed 10 candidates for the Blacksburg High football coach position.
"Mickey Moss exempliflies what a coach should be," said principal Jim Touchberry, who handled the coaching search. "Everywhere he has been he has stressed character and discipline on his teams."
His teams have produced 40 college football players and two NFLplayers.
Superintendent Dr. Bill James coached with Moss at Saluda High School.
"We welcome Mr. Moss and his family to Cherokee County and wish him great success with the football program at Blacksburg," James said.
