City, BPW election filing period opens May 30
By LARRY HILLIARD Ledger Staff Writer larry@gaffneyledger.com

Gaffney City Council and mayoral hopefuls should circle May 30 on their calendars. That's when candidates can begin filing for office.

The Gaffney Election Commission approved the election calendar in a brief meeting Thursday at city hall.

Gaffney Administrator James Taylor told the commission members the election calendar, including the dates for advertising the election in the media, comply with state election laws.

After Taylor's statement, commission chairman Ray Clary moved quickly to make a motion to approve the 2-page election calendar.

Commission members told Taylor to request the Cherokee County Election Commission conduct the election.

The 2-week filing period for council and mayor ends June 13, just less than two months before the general election on Tuesday, Aug. 12. If necessary, runoff elections would be held Tuesday, Aug. 26.

This year, District 1 council member Wayne Ramsey, District 4's Dennis Ramsey and Billy Love, who represents council district 6, as well as 2- term mayor Henry Jolly are up for re-election. All incumbents are expected to seek reelection.

The election commission also oversees the Gaffney Board of Public Works commission elections. Candidates can begin submitting their petitions for the commission seats at noon on May 15. That 2-week filing period concludes on May 28 at noon.

This time around, District 1 commissioner Joe Dean Knuckles and District 3 commissioner Elijah Inabinette will be on the ballot.
