Lady Saints victorious in conference opener, 18-6 Sophomore Kerrie Brown registered a hat trick and one assist for host St. Andrews Presbyterian College but the visiting Limestone College women's lacrosse team won the Conference Carolinas opener for both schools, 18-6, on Saturday afternoon. Juniors Melissa Howard and Lauryn Wise each had six points for Limestone. Brown, who led the Knights with 72 points last season, gave St. Andrews a quick 1-0 lead with a goal exactly two minutes into the game. The Saints catapulted into their first lead of the contest, 2-1, with goals by Howard and junior Shea Farrell. Limestone broke away from St. Andrews with the next six goals of the first half. The Saints also held the Knights scoreless for almost 20 minutes before Brown notched her second goal with 30 seconds left before the intermission to cut the halftime deficit to 8-3. Wise scored all four of her goals in the first half to help Limestone take a five-goal lead into the midway break. The Saints continued to build on the lead to start the second half with the first three goals of the period but a pair of St. Andrews goals pulled the Royal Blue and White to within six, 11-5, with 20 minutes left. Limestone, picked No. 1 in the Conference Carolinas preseason coaches' poll, finally ended any hope of a comeback scoring seven of the last eight goals. Wise had a game-high four goals and two assists while Howard had a hat trick and three assists. Junior Kelly Lickert and sophomore Kelly Oterson each added one goal and two assists for the visitors. Farrell finished with two goals while senior Summer Ferraro had one goal and one assist. Limestone held a 35-24 shot advantage while St. Andrews committed more turnovers, 19-10. |
