08 SCHEDULE
Peach Ball the signature festival event
By SCOTT POWELL Ledger Staff Writer spowell@gaffneyledger.com

The Peach Ball will be the signature event in this year's sportsthemed South Carolina Peach Festival from June 20-29.

The Peach Ball is the only major music event listed on a schedule recently approved by the festival board. No times have been finalized for the events.

The Peach Ball will be June 27 at the Broad River Electric Co- Op Auditorium. The social event will feature musical entertainment, food and dancing.

Festival board members decided to bring back the Peach Ball last year following a 21-year absence. The beach music group Men of Distinction performed for four hours.

This year's major festival activities will include a race June 26 at Cherokee Speedway. A Professional Bowling Association (PBA) qualifier on June 28-29 at Starmax.

"The Peach Ball will be our signature event this year," said Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Gene Moorhead, an ex-officio member of the festival board. "I think the PBA bowling qualifier will help bring in a lot of tourism."

The Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce will hold a kickoff party and peach dessert contest on Friday, June 20. Both events will be held on the Chamber lawn at 225 S. Limestone St.

Planned activities include a barbecue lunch, ice cream, beach music, a live radio remote broadcast, coffee from Starbuck's and a preview of the festival.

"We had 200 people attend the kickoff party last year. It was well above our expectations," Moorhead said. "I think this year's event will be bigger and better."

The festival will hold its popular parade and Family Fun Fest on Saturday, June 21 in downtown Gaffney. An average of 2,000 people have attended the family festival in recent years in the downtown area following the parade.

Activities include children's rides, performances by local dance groups, bands, arts and crafts and vendors.

New Talent Night is planned for June 24 at Fullerton Auditorium. The festival co-sponsors the amateur talent show with the Blacksburg Rotary Club.

Sporting events dominate the remainder of this year's festival schedule.

A softball tournament will be held June 21-22 at the Ford Recreation Complex. An amateur bowling tournament will take place June 25 at Starmax.

A golf tournament and pro-am bowling tournament are the activities scheduled for Friday, June 27 before the Peach Ball.

The festival's final weekend will feature a road race and basketball tournament Saturday, June 28, at Limestone College.

Festival officials will announce entertainers, ticket information and other details at a later date.
