Indians return to Byrnes for showcase
By LARRY HILLIARD Ledger Sports Editor larry@gaffneyledger.com

The Gaffney Indians will return to Byrnes High School's Nixon Field, but it won't be during the regular season.

And the Indians won't be playing the defending Class 4A champion Rebels.

Byrnes has agreed to host the preseason Border Showcase Classic IV on Aug. 15, according to organizer and Polk County High School football coach Bruce Ollis.

"Byrnes was involved in our inaugural event in 2005 and we are awfully excited to have them back," Ollis said. "Participating teams have won a combined 43 state championships The Indians lead the list with 16."

The event will begin at 7 p.m. with Polk County facing Spartanburg High and new coach Freddie Brown.

Gaffney will once again face Crest High School before the Rebels and Shelby take the field.

"We decided to move the game to a South Carolina venue for 2008 and Byrnes football coach Chris Miller was gracious enough to offer us the opportunity to use their facility which I think will be a treat for all high school football fans in the area," Ollis said. "Our goal is to offer the high school football fan the chance to see great high school football along with matchups that don't normally occur during the regular season. The Border Showcase will give fans that opportunity."

Tickets for the game will be $10 at the gate. Those seeking sponsorship opportunities may call Polk County Athletic Director Jeff Wilson at (828) 894-8002 or Ollis at (828) 894-5697.
