The Limestone softball team split a doubleheader with Chowan on Saturday. The Lady Saints dropped the opener 2-0, but took the nightcap, 7-0.

first Bassmaster

Alton Jones won his first Bassmaster Classic title Sunday, beating Cliff Pace by 5 pounds, 2 ounces at Lake Hartwell.

Jones, from Waco, Texas, had a final-day catch of 13 pounds, 7 ounces for a three-day total of 49 pounds, 7 ounces. Competing in his 11th Bassmaster Classic, Jones earned $500,000 from the $1.2 million purse.

Pace, from Petal, Miss., caught 11 pounds Sunday to finish at 44 pounds, 5 ounces.

Kevin VanDam of Kalamazoo, Mich., was third at 43 pounds, 8 ounces, and Bobby Lane of Lakeland, Fla., at 42 pounds, 7 ounces.

''I always thought it would be fun to win a Classic, but I never dreamed it would be quite this much fun,'' said Jones, whose previous best finish in the event was seventh in 2000 and 2003. ''It's a little overwhelming and there's a lot of humility when I look at the names on those flags up around those rafters and I don't feel worthy. They're my heroes, so I'm humbled to be part of this.''

Jones' final day was an up-anddown affair, starting with a pair of ''fruitless'' spots before landing his first bass around 9:30. After two more blanks, ''I finally hit one little place where I caught two on consecutive casts."
