BHS ninth grade addition set to open next week Blacksburg High hopes to begin using its ninth grade addition next week. Workers will be in the school Wednesday to begin installing computers and other kinds of technology equipment in the 2-story wing. Classrooms will be outfitted with interactive electronic whiteboards for math and science classes. Contractor Randolph Builders has made progress in correcting items on a punch list that school officials want fixed before moving into the school, Blacksburg High Principal Jim Touchberry said. "We are making tentative plans to move into the ninth grade addition next week," Touchberry said. The $6.2 million project included the ninth grade addition, an athletic field house, softball field and minor stadium repairs. The addition includes 12 regular classrooms, two physical science labs, a band room addition and guidance offices. The school plans to furnish a commons area in the ninth grade addition, Touchberry said. The commons area will serve as a meeting area for students before school. At Monday's meeting, school trustees voted unanimously to renovate the original women's restroom building at the Blacksburg High stadium. The $7,500 project will result in four new bathroom stalls that will be available for athletic events. The district will fund the stadium restroom project from its maintenance department budget, superintendent Dr. Bill James said. The project will done by district maintenance workers. The work includes replacing old floor tiles, installing new bathroom fixtures and privacy partitions. It will be completed over the next several months. School board chairman Donnie Lee Smith requested the additional restrooms in January. The new Blacksburg High athletic field house has only three bathrooms in the women's restroom. While attending football games last fall, Smith said he received many complaints from women about long lines due to an inadequate number of restrooms. The new project will double the amount of women restrooms in the stadium. Smith was happy when school trustees approved the project. "I can enjoy the football games a little better," he said. |
