Ralph Guthrie

U.S. Navy veteran

of WWII and Korean

MOUNT PLEASANT - ICC Ralph Alexander Guthrie, USN (Ret.), 91, widower of Thelma Sellars Guthrie, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2008.

Ralph was born Feb. 16, 1917, in Gaffney, a son of the late Calvin Jack Guthrie and Daisy Northey Guthrie. He served in the United States

Navy during World

War II and the

Korean Conflict. After retiring from the Navy, he worked at the Charleston Naval Shipyard in Shop No. 51. He was a deacon at Charleston Heights Baptist Church and taught Sunday School at Charleston Heights Baptist Church and Cooper River Baptist Church.

Surviving are his two daughters, Brenda G. Marques and her husband, Francisco, of Mt. Pleasant and Marjorie Jolly Harrison and her husband, Glen, of Charlotte, N.C.; a son, Wayne Nelson Guthrie of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; a daughter-inlaw, JoAnne Guthrie of North Carolina; two sisters, Juanita Harris and Marie Ross of Blacksburg; grandchildren, Jason Guthrie Marques of North Charleston, Edmund Frank Marques and his wife, Bridgette, of Mt. Pleasant, Todd Ashley Guthrie and his wife, Chasidy, of Texas, Wayne Nelson Guthrie Jr. of Virginia, Sharon Guthrie of Washington, D.C., Michael Harrison of Charlotte and Darrell Harrison and his wife, Sandy, of Charlotte; and eight great grandchildren.

In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Guthrie was preceded in death by a son, Ralph A. Guthrie Jr., in 1985.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association (Palmetto Chapter), 1941 Savage Road, Suite 400-D, Charleston, S.C. 29407; or Cooper River Baptist Church, 1059 Crawford St., North Charleston, S.C. 29405.

Services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Cooper River Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.
