Big inning propels Indians to victory
By JOE L. HUGHES II Ledger Sports Writer joe@gaffneyledger.com

Gaffney pitcher Bobby Jackson receives congratulations after retiring the side in order against York in the opening game of the Frank Roach tournament on Monday. The Indians will host Clover today.
Gaffney began its season with a bang Monday, using a 19-run second inning to beat York 19-2 in the opening game of the Frank Roach preseason tournament.

The Indians took advantage of Cougar miscues and walks during the game, helping the some members of the team come to bat twice,

"We used a lot of discipline against their pitchers, who are pretty good," Gaffney baseball coach Tom Owens said. "Though we believe their pitchers were not at their best, it feels good to score 19 runs and get a win under your belt."

A strong performance on the mound by Indian pitchers Bobby Jackson and Matt Lester helped key the team to victory. The two hurlers combined to give up only two hits while racking up 12 strikeouts in five innings of play.

"Our pitching really helped us against York," Owens said. "(Jackson) gave us four good innings before we could put Lester in to finish things off."

Gaffney also played well while in the field, committing only one error.

"Our defense played well with the exception of the error. But overall I am particularly pleased with our effort," Owens said.

The team's game Tuesday at Nations Ford was cancelled due to rainfall in the area. Gaffney will resume play in the tournament Wednesday at home against Clover.

Owens said he expects a good game from the Eagles, who gave the Indians fits last year.

"Clover had a real good team last year and I think a lot of those same members of that team are back this year," Owens said. "I expect to see a great team out of Clover, making this a good, close contest."

Dylan Jolley is expected to take the mound for Gaffney when they take the field at Commissioner's Field. The game is slated to begin at 5:30 p.m.
