'Mongoose' spells victory for Davidson
By SCOTT POWELL Ledger Staff Writer spowell@gaffneyledger.com

Gaffney Middle School sixth grader Sierra Davidson successfully spelled the word "mongoose" Tuesday morning to win the Cherokee County School District spelling bee at Luther Vaughan Elementary.
Gaffney Middle School sixth grader Sierra Davidson was thankful she didn't get a more difficult word to spell Tuesday morning before winning the Cherokee County School District spelling bee.

Davidson correctly spelled "mongoose" to win the spelling bee at Luther Vaughan Elementary. She faced a more difficult task had the contest continued.

Upcoming words in the final round included - dungaree, peleton, escargot, nirvana and macrame.

"I was really surprised when I won the spelling bee," Davidson said. "I was runner-up last year in my school spelling bee at Grassy Pond, but this was my first time at the (district) spelling bee. There were some really hard words."

The school district used a different format for this year's spelling bee.

Winners from each Cherokee County elementary and middle school participated in the contest. Students correctly spelled 70 words before Davidson won the spelling bee.

Unlike past years, Davidson did not have to correctly spell the word "juggernaut," missed by runner-up Danika Duncan from Ewing Middle. Davidson only had to spell the next word, "mongoose," to win the spelling bee.

"This was a challenging spelling bee," program coordinator Kim Bagwell said. "The words got progressively harder in the competition. We are very proud of every student who participated."

Each school winner received a trophy and dictionary. The trophies were purchased by First Piedmont Federal Savings & Loan. Dictionaries were presented on behalf of the Cherokee County School Board.

Elementary contestants included: Alex Hood (Alma), Michael Painter (B.D. Lee), Ally McCurry (Blacksburg), Landon Batchler (Corinth), Emma Mullinax (Draytonville), Hannah Allison (Goucher), Ja'Quarian Foster (Grassy Pond), Ethan Cook (Limestone-Central), Marcus McCluney (Luther Vaughan), Raven Byars (Mary Bramlett) and Alexis Turner (Northwest).

Middle school competitors were: Katie Byars (Blacksburg Middle), Halee Rogers (Granard Middle), Duncan and Davidson.
