The Gaffney Indians are making it look easy.
John Michaels and Cameron Culp combined for the shutout and Bobby Jackson ignited the offense with four hits to lead the Indians to an 8-0 victory over South Pointe in the Frank Roach tournament on Thursday.
The Indians have beaten their three tournament opponents by a combined score of 41-6.
Despite the offensive explosion, Gaffney coach Tom Owens said he's most pleased with the team's defense. The Indians have committed only three errors in the tournament.
"We've played real good defense," Owens said. "We were able to turn a couple of doubleplays."
Leading 3-0, the Indians broke the game open with five runs in the sixth and seventh innings.
Jackson also drove in two runs. Joe Ben Frye, Michael Hughey and Josh Mata each had a hit and two RBIs for the Indians.
Gaffney improved to 2-0 in the tournament with a decisive 14-4 win over Clover on Wednesday.
Dylan Jolley pitched two strong innings before struggling in the third. Tyler Wilson replaced Jolley and gave up just one run the rest of the way.
Owens said the cold temperatures made it hard for the pitchers to grip the ball.
"Dylan pitched two good innings before he just got numb in the third and struggled a little bit," Owens said.
Michael Hughey was one of the hitting stars with three hits. Josh Mata, Nick Mabry and Wilson all had two hits. McCrae Norton and Jolley each drove in two runs.
After a scoreless first inning, the Indians struck for six runs in the top of the second. Clover pulled within three runs in the third inning before the Indians added six more runs in the bottom of the inning.
The game was shortened to five innings because of the 10- run rule.
Wilson, a transfer from Hartsville High School, will get the start today against Northwestern.
Wilson will look to build upon his impressive relief performance against Clover.
"He had a pretty good outing the other night," Owens said.
