By LARRY HILLIARD Ledger Sports Editor larry@gaffneyledger.com

Gaffney's Hillary Key had a double in a 5-4 extra-inning loss to Chesnee on Wednesday in the opener of the Gene Lee tournament.
Gaffney's Courtney Campbell made the most out of a rare starting opportunity on Thursday.

Campbell struck out 10 and walked just one in a 3-1 victory over Byrnes in the second round of the Gene Lee tournament.

"She had an excellent outing for us," Gaffney coach Kelly Ellis said.

The Lady Rebels led 1-0 after the first inning. It stayed that way until the fifth when Gaffney's Lana Ward had a 2-run single and Julie Sarratt drove in the game's final run with a single.

Cameron Crocker walked and Sara Griffith doubled to ignite the rally.

Chesnee had to work overtime to beat the Gaffney Lady Indians in the opening game of the tournament on Wednesday.

With the game tied at four, the Lady Eagles scored the game-winning run in the eighth inning for a 5-4 victory.

"We had three errors that hurt us," Ellis said.

The Gaffney coach also complained about the frigid temperatures.

"Really, the game shouldn't have been played," she said.

Chesnee scored a pair of runs in the first and second innings.

The Lady Indians could only muster single runs in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings.

Megan Sexton reached on an error and scored on Megan Stanridge's double in the first inning. Lana Ward reached on an error and scored the Lady Indians' lone run in the second.

Hillary Key's double knocked in the run in the fourth inning. Cameron Crocker had the Lady Indians' RBI in the fifth.

Stanridge was 3 for 4 for the Lady Indians, who outhit Chesnee, 6-5.

Julie Sarratt took the loss.

"Julie pitched well but Chesnee had some strong hitters," Ellis said.

Gaffney faces Broome at 4:30 p.m. today. If the Lady Indians beat Broome, they will play again at 6 p.m.
