BPW wants scoreboard sign deal put into writing
By LARRY HILLIARD Ledger Staff Writer larry@gaffneyledger.com

Call it a sign of the times.

The Gaffney Board of Public Works wants to put in writing its agreement with school officials to become a primary sponsor of the Gaffney High football stadium jumbotron.

The commissioners agreed last summer to shell out $150,000 to buy ad space on the stadium jumbotron.

Board of Public Works General Manager Donnie Hardin said the contract will protect both parties.

"The sign will be here long after we are here," Hardin said. "Our attorney is working with the school board attorney. We just want the agreement to protect the Board."

Hardin said the contract will address several issues, including maintenance of the sign.

"This is a business deal between the school system and Board which needs to be put down in writing," Hardin said. "We want to make sure that everybody is protected."

Hardin said the utility has yet to transfer the money to the school system. That won't happen until the Board approves the contract.

Board attorney Jim Thompson said the contract might be completed in time for the commissioners meeting in April.

Commissioner Roger Harris, who opposed the expenditure, has asked to review the contract before it's signed.
