Elvert H. Burgess ELLENBORO, N.C. - Elvert Harding Burgess, 87, of 536 Pilgrim Road, passed away Wednesday, March 5, 2008, at Autumn Care of Forest City, N.C. Mr. Burgess was born Nov. 4, 1920, in Rutherford County to Lloyd Burgess and Osee Lewis Burgess. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of over 50 years, Lucille Ruppe Burgess, and his wife, Zarah Burgess; three brothers, Clarence Burgess, Grady Burgess and Forrest "Smokey" Burgess; and a sister, Frances Gibson. Mr. Burgess was retired from Duke Power after 26 years of service. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran who served his country on D-Day. He is survived by three daughters, Janice Lewis and husband, Ed, of Ellenboro, Audrey Allmond of Forest City and Luanne Holcomb of Spindale, N.C; eight grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Services will be held Saturday, March 8, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Harrelson Funeral Home, conducted by the Revs. Dale Austin and Jerry Ruppe. Burial will follow in Glenwood Baptist Church Cemetery, with military honors accorded by the Rutherford County Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Friday, March 7, from 6-8 p.m. at Harrelson Funeral Home, Caroleen. The family requests that memorials be made to Hospice of Rutherford County, P.o.
