Political events

The Cherokee County Democratic Convention will be held Thursday, March 13, at 6:30 p.m. at B.D. Lee Elementary School.

The Cherokee County Republican Party will hold its monthly meeting Thursday, March 13, 2008, at 6:30 p.m. at Party Headquarters, 230 E. Floyd Baker Boulevard. The special guest speaker will be Glenn McCall, the first Black Republican to serve on the national level in the party.

Church

meetings

The 20th annual Thickety Mountain Baptist Association revival services will be held March 10-13 at 7 p.m. at Bethel Baptist Church, 218 L.M. Rosemond Lane.

Guest evangelists will be the Rev. Ronnie Williams, pastor of Generostee Baptist Church in Anderson.

Music will be provided by the Thickety Mountain Baptist Association,Youth and Brotherhood choirs.

The Chesnee Music Center will host Truly Blessed Saturday March 15 at 7 p.m. For more information, please call Tony at (828) 202-5603.

The Friendship Baptist Church of Spartanburg and the First Baptist Church of Fairforest will hold a combined Easter Sunrise Service at Friendship Baptist Church at 250 Morning Drive, Spartanburg, on Sunday, March 23.

The Rev. W. Irwin Jenkins, pastor of First Baptist Church of Fairforest will be the guest speaker.

The program will begin at 6 a.m. The public is invited.

There will be a special service at New Harvest Ministries, 215 Pecan St., Gaffney, on Friday, March 14, at 7 p.m. Evangelists Neil and Jane Evans from Marietta will be speaking.

The Turning Point Free Will Baptist Church, 104 Fairview Church Rd., in Spartanburg, will be holding its Old Fashion Spring Campmeeting March 16-21.

At the 11 a.m. service on March 16, former Cincinnati Reds baseball player and current minister Benny Hartley will preach. We invite all to hear his testimony, no matter whether they are lost, or having problems with drug or alcohol addiction.

From March 17-21, minister Bob McMurry will be preaching. There will be special singing at each service. Evening services begin at 7 p.m.

Meetings

The monthly meeting of Jack E. Daniel Chapter 54 DAV will be held Thursday, March 13, at 6:30 p.m., upstairs in the VFW Post 3447.

All members are asked to attend and spouses are welcome.

In addition to these members, an invitation is extended to all disabled veterans with an honorable discharge and their spouses, and retired military personnel and their spouses. VA Officer Sammy Willard will be present to answer questions pertaining to his field.

A Cherokee County Public Library board meeting has been scheduled for March 18 at 4 p.m. at the Gaffney branch on East Rutledge St.

Fundraisers

You can enjoy homemade vegetable soup and help local charities while on your lunch hour Thursday, March 13.

Altrusa of Gaffney will be serving vegetable soup, cornbread, dessert and tea at the Episcopal Church of the Incarnation on College Drive from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Cost is $5.

All proceeds will be donated to local charities. Take-out will be available.

The Appalachia Aging and Disability Resource Center and the Lt. Gov.'s Office on Aging will present "Planning for Your Long-Term Care Needs" at the Gaffney Senior Center, 499 W. Rutledge St., on Thursday, March 13 from 1-3 p.m. Topics to be covered include understanding, planning and paying for long-term care insurance; Medicaid eligibility; and legal issues (powers of attorney, wills, advanced directives, etc.). There is no charge to attend the workshop, but register by calling Joan Wood at (864)487-2725 or (864) 242- 9733.
