Monroe Benjamine Smith, Sr.

Monroe Benjamine Smith, Sr., 85, of 223 Tiffany Park, Gaffney, widow of Mrs. Mary Jane Glenn Smith, passed Friday morning, March 7, 2008, at 8:07 a.m. at Upstate Carolina Center, Gaffney.

Son of the late James Smith and the late Ada Smith, he was a native of Cherokee County.

He was a member of Albert Chapel United Methodist Church. Before moving to Blacksburg, he attended Hopewell Presbyterian Church of Blacksburg.

He was a retired employee of Firestone Mill in Gastonia, North Carolina.

He is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Christine Vanlue and Mrs. Ruby Hames both of Gaffney, Mrs. Jacqueline McClure of Gastonia, North Carolina and Ms. Ann Wilson of Spartanburg; his son, Monroe B. Smith, Jr. of Gaffney; eight grandchildren; nine greatgrandchildren; and a host of other relatives.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 13th, at 2 p.m. at Dunton United Methodist Church with Rev. John W. Evans, Dr. Michael Bridges, Rev. Lewis McClure and Minister Amber Tartley officiating.

Interment will follow in Frederick Memorial Gardens.

He will lie in state at 1 p.m. until the hour of the service.

The family is at the home of his daughter and son-inlaw, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth and Ruby Hames at 582 Northgate Road, Gaffney.
