Charles Van Sikes
Manager of Bank of North Carolina in Lillington for 20 years

 
LILLINGTON, N.C. - Charles Van Sikes, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, entered into rest on Tuesday, March 18, 2008.

Charles was a member of Lillington Baptist Church and sang in the choir there for many years. He was twice president of the Lillington Chamber of Commerce during the 1970s; was president of the Lillington Lion's Club from 1984 -1985; served as a Lillington Town Commissioner for eight years; and was head of the Harnett County Heart Association for five years.

Mr. Sikes was manager of the Bank of North Carolina in Lillington for 20 years.

Charles was a living example of the characteristics of honesty, devotion to his family, integrity and a sense of fair play.

Mr. Sikes grew up in Shelby, the son of Frank H. Sikes Sr. and Janie Mae Shannon Sikes. He served in the United States Navy during World War II aboard an LST Ship. After his tour of duty in the military, he finished Gardner Webb University and Furman University, where he was a member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity. He also attended Stetson University Law School for extra training in business management. He began his career with M&J Finance Corporation and moved to Lillington upon joining the Bank of Lillington in 1966.

 
Survivors are his wife, Ellen Moseley Sikes, who was a professor at Campbell University for over 20 years; sons, Dr. Charles Van Sikes Jr. and his wife, Donna, of Sanford and Dr. Mark Moseley Sikes and his wife, Susan, of Charlotte; a daughter, Laura Susan Sikes of Charlotte; grandchildren, Dr. Charles Van Sikes III and his wife, Brooke, of Winston-Salem; Scott Sikes, currently attending optometry school in Birmingham, Ala., and Carter Sikes, 4, of Charlotte; a great-granddaughter, Leah Caroline Sikes of Winston-Salem; two brothers, Frank H. Sikes Jr. of Shelby and Fred Vernon Sikes of New Bern; and a sister, Virginia Duncan of Forest City.

Services will be held Friday, March 21, at 4 p.m. at Lillington Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Jeff Roberts, Dr. Michael Cogdill and the Rev. Ken Smith. Burial will be in Westview Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 2:30-3:30 p.m. at the church prior to the service.  Condolences may be sent online at www.oquinnpeebles.com.
