Chesnee blanks Wildcats
By LARRY HILLIARD Ledger Sports Editor larry@gaffneyledger.com

Chesnee's biggest weapon was the Blacksburg defense on Friday.

The Eagles took advantage of three consecutive Wildcat errors to score all five of its runs in the fourth inning in a 5- 0 victory over Blacksburg.

Blacksburg ace Dustin Byars deserved a better fate, allowing just four hits and five runs, none of which were earned.

"Dustin really pitched well," Blacksburg coach Toby Elliott said. "We just had that one bad inning."

Blacksburg falls to 5-2 overall and 3-2 in region play.

In the game-deciding fourth inning, Stephen Cantrell got things going for the Eagles with a single. After Byars struck out Cory Frye for the first out, Dave Cash reached on an error to score Cantrell.

Cash went to third when Matt McClellan's hit to shortstop was misplayed into an error and scored on an error by the third baseman.

Jordan Garrett made it 3-0 with a single to score McClellan. The Eagles went up 4- 0 on David Jones' single and added their final run of the inning on a fielder's choice off the bat of Brandon Henderson.

Henderson allowed just three hits in five innings to earn the win. Cash struck out three in two innings of work.

The Wildcats had a chance to get back into the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. After putting runners on second and third, Henderson whiffed the next two batters to end the threat.

Brent Humphries, Tanner Hughes, Chase Norman and Will Raines had the hits for Blacksburg, which is off until Friday when Chapman travels to Troublefield Park.
