Craig plans to seek seat on school board; Greene says she probably won't run again

Joe Craig has already started preparing for another run for a Cherokee County School Board seat.

Craig plans to seek the District 6 school board seat currently held by incumbent Sandra Greene.

Craig announced his plans Monday in an open letter to voters. He ran against school trustee Willie Crosby for the District 2 seat in 2004.

"In May I am going to file to be a candidate for the District 6 school board seat," Craig said. "I plan to be the first person in line to file for the school board."

Craig is the owner of Craig's Towing in Gaffney. He has a son who is a student at Gaffney High.

Craig has lived in District 6 for the past two years. Alma Elementary and Cherokee Technology Center are the two schools located in the area.

"In the past two years of living in District 6 I have seen and heard a lot of things good and bad. I feel like District 6 needs a change for the better for the children," Craig said. "As a father with a child in school, I feel like I can make a difference for the children in the Cherokee County school system."

Craig might not get a chance to run against Greene for the District 6 seat.

Greene represented District 6 on the school board from 1988-2000.

Greene defeated incumbent Clay Cole to return to the school board in 2004. Cole has since moved to the Corinth area.

Greene said she is strongly considering not running for the school board this year.

"Never say never," Greene said. "Right now I'm 99 percent certain that I don't want to run for another term on the school board."

The school board filing period will begin May 30. The 2-week filing period for the school board will end June 13.

In addition to Greene, school trustees up for re-election are school board chairman Donnie Lee Smith, Willie Crosby and Billy Blackwell.

County voters will elect a new school board member for the District 8 seat held for 15 years by Ola Copeland. There were 13 months left on Copeland's term when the former school board chairman died in October.
