Gaffney track teams make strides in region Move over Dorman and Spartanburg. There's a new region contender - the Gaffney Indians. The Gaffney boys track team finished its region schedule with a 4-2 record after beating Mauldin and Hillcrest last Thursday. The Indians' only losses were to perennial powers Dorman and Spartanburg. The Indians topped Byrnes 100-31 and downed Mauldin 83-49. "This was a great way to wrap up the region after losing to Spartanburg," Gaffney boys track coach James Davis said. Joe Craig won the 100 and 200 meter events and joined with Timmy Foster, Darius Dawkins and Cameron Smith to take the 4x100 relay. Gaffney's Quincey Jackson won the 400 hurdles. The Indians also were strong in the field events, with Denzell Good winning the discus and Darius Dawkins taking first in the shot put. Gaffney travels to Broome for a non-region meet on Thursday. In the girls competition, the Lady Indians finished over .500 in the region with a win over Byrnes. The highlight for the Lady Indians was a secondplace finish in the 4x400 relay by Shamaka Adams, Quantisha Chamberlin, Amaih Thompson and Leah Fair. "We have a good young team," Gaffney girls track coach Kevin Hammett said. |
