Blacksburg council OKs tax increase, trash fees, water and sewer rate hikes

      For the members of Blacksburg Town Council, approving a budget that included a tax increase was not something any of them wanted to do. But following losses in revenue town officials had no choice on Thursday, unanimously signing off on the town's budget for the 2008- 09 fiscal year.

      COLUMBIA - Students from Gaffney have been named to the Dean's List and/or the President's List at the University of South Carolina for fall 2007. To appear on the President's Honors List, students must take 12 semester credit hours and earn a grade point average of 4.0.

Named Fulbright Scholar
      Limestone College Associate Professor of English Dr. Alex Richardson was recently awarded a Fulbright Scholar Award to teach in Portugal. Richardson will be traveling to the Island of Madeira next spring to teach two courses on American culture at the University of Madeira.

      John E. Ewing Middle School has received $2,500 from the Food Lion Charitable Foundation. Ewing Middle will use the gift to purchase science and social studies materials such as practice workbooks for the Palmetto Achievement Challenge Test.
