Voters urged to check registration

The Voter Registration office is gearing up for a busy election year.

Voter registration for the primary elections to be held on June 10 will close Saturday, May 10. In order to vote, one must be registered at least 30 days prior to any election, according to S.C. election law.

People who are already registered but need to make a change of address should visit the Voter Registration office to change their address so that they will be placed in the proper voting precinct before the May 10 deadline.

"We ask each of you to make sure your voter registration information is up to date now so that you won't have a long wait at the polling place or at the voter registration office on election day. This election year is shaping up to be a very exciting and busy, and we want to make sure that the voting process to be as convenient possible for all of our citizens while following the election laws of South Carolina and the United States," said Barbara Shackleford, chairperson of the Cherokee County Voter Registration. "We welcome the opportunity to talk with anyone who needs information or has any questions about registering to vote and/or absentee voting. Please do not hesitate to call or visit us."

The Voter Registration office is located at 1434 N. Limestone St., inside Peachtree Centre, First Floor, Room 1008. Current office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m.-noon and 1-5 p.m. Beginning Monday, April 14, office hours will be 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Important Dates for Voters

. May 10 - Last day to register to vote in June 10 Primary Election

. June 6 - First day 17-year-olds may register to vote in Nov. 4 General Election

. June 10 - Primary Election Day. Polls open 7 a.m.-7 p.m.

. June 24 - Primary Runoff Election Day (if required). Polls open 7 a.m.-7 p.m.

. Oct. 4 - Last day to register to vote in Nov. 4 General Election . Nov. 4 - General Election Day. Polls open 7 a.m.-7 p.m.
