School damaged during break-in

Cherokee County School District employees found themselves fixing more than a thousand dollars worth of damage after the Monday morning discovery of a break-in at Mary Bramlett Elementary School.

According to Gaffney police, someone broke into the Spruce Street school over the weekend, sometime between Saturday afternoon and Monday morning, likely through a bathroom window.

Once inside, the burglar(s) broke into a lunch room office, a media center office and smashed door windows to offices and classrooms.

It was believed at the time of the incident report the burglars may have stolen digital cameras and a Sony handheld recorder from the school as well as some small amounts of cash from desks.

Police reported they also found an open safe, but the school principal was unable to determine if anything was missing.

Neither the principal, nor the district superintendent, could be reached for immediate comment Thursday.

The school district is on spring break this week. Students return to class Monday.

A maintenance worker said staff had replaced the broken glass on Wednesday.

A police report estimated the school sustained about $1,275 in damage and that a drink machine sustained about $2,500 in damage.
