BRIEFS on tap for April 19 The 2008 Annual Member Golf Tournament, sponsored by the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce, will be held Friday, April 18, at Cherokee National Golf Club. Registration and lunch will begin at 11 a.m. with lunch catered by Fatz. Shotgun start is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. using a Captain's Choice format. Prizes for hole in one, closest to the pin, longest drive and 1st, 2nd, 3rd Flights will be awarded. Corporate sponsorships are available at $500 which includes a team and hole sponsorship. Team sponsorships are $300 and includes 2 mulligans and 1 red tee player. Hole sponsorships are $100 each. Sponsorships include publicity both at the tournament and in the media. Local hoop league begins signups The Giving Back Organization is signing up students (boys and girls) ages 5 to 18 for the Free Spring/Summer Basketball Program. Retired coach Keith Richardson will be the guest speaker. The meal will be catered and an update on the Foundation will be presented. All who played football or baseball for Coach Prevatte from 1956-1969 are invited to attend. Pledge cards will be availalbe and checks will be accepted for those who want to pay on this year's pledge. Saints lax team blasts Mars Hill The No. 3 Limestone College men's lacrosse team defeated Mars Hill 21-12 in a non-conference contest on Wednesday afternoon at Saints Field. The Saints remain undefeated with a 9-0 record as the Lions fall to 9-5. Limestone outscored Mars Hill 5-3 in the opening quarter, but the Saints broke the game open with six goals in the second quater. Brendan Storrier led the Saints with four goals, while Justin Haworth, A.J. Vaughn, Michael Poerstel and Brock Spilker scored three goals apiece. Haworth, Matt Pinder, Jake Rogalia and Vaughn each tallied two assists. Goalkeeper James Tuohy posted 11 saves. Mars Hill was led by Tyler Farmer's four goals and two assists. David Hodgins scored three goals. Limestone hosts Pfeiffer University on Saturday in Conference Carolinas action at 1 p.m. Erskine tops Saints, 16-6 The Limestone College baseball team fell to No. 14 ranked Erskine Thursday afternoon at Saints Field, 16-6. Limestone falls to 21-27 overall, 9- 13 in the league. Josh Joseph took the loss, allowing four hits and three earned runs in three innings of work. For Erskine, Chase Anthony was 3-for-6 with 3 RBIs. The Saints' Drew Lydon was 3-for- 4 with 3 RBIs. Phillip Soden was 3- for-5 with 2 RBIs and a run scored. |
